Understanding the basics…

Introduction

In medical and clinical terminology, the term “osteo” means “bone” and the suffix “itis” specifies inflammation.  So, Osteoarthritis signifies “inflammation of the bones”.Though, this disease is more rigorous than its explanation “inflammation of the bones” given above.There are more than 100 types of arthritis, and this disease is believed as the commonest arthritis amongst those people who are suffering from arthritis.

What Is osteoarthritis?

Every bone of our body is sheltered by a greasy tissue known as cartilage. These cartilages are present on the bone ends of our joints that permit the healthy movement of our joints.  As osteoarthritis frequently affects the top coating of the cartilage and the cartilage breaks as a result you experience painful feelings.  Because of this joints are no longer guarded from the shock of any kind and our bones below the cartilage start to rub with each other that causes decrease in movement, pain and swelling of our joints.  Gradually, the form of our joints deforms.   Spurs might as well start to rise on the ends of our joint.  Fragments of cartilage or bone can as well break off that causes damage and pain.

Osteoarthritis influences our joints only.  People suffering from osteoarthritis don’t have any kind of danger to their inner organs as with other types of arthritis.  This disease occurs normally in the knees, hips, spine and hands.

Who is at risk?

However, occurrence of osteoarthritis in young people is very minimal, this disease mostly develops in aged people.

What Causes Osteoarthritis?

it is a state that normally develops over time.  Threat factors involved in this disease are:

  1. strains on the joints while doing certain jobs
  2. strains on the joints while playing sports
  3. genetic fault in joint cartilages
  4. Joint injury
  5. Aging
  6. Overweight

Osteoarthritis symptoms:

  • A crunching experience or sound when the joint bones rub with each other
  • Swelling or tenderness in joints
  • inflexibility in joints after sitting for a long time or getting out of bed

How Is Osteoarthritis Diagnosed?

There are various ways that employed by the physicians to detect Osteoarthritis and these are:

  • medical history of a patient
  • patient’s physical exam
  • X rays
  • Examining the blood or fluid of the joints of the patient and other several tests that will assist to decide whether Osteoarthritis present or not.

How is osteoarthritis treated?
